Jive is a dance style that originated among
African – Americans in the early 1940’s.
It is a lively & uninhibited variation
of the jitterbug i.e. belongs to swing dances.
In Ballroom dancing, jive is one of the
five International Latin dances. Jive is
a style of 1933 played by big bands popular
in the 1930’s flowing rhythms but
less complex than later styles of jazz.
Modern jive, sometimes called French- Jive
is a dance style that originated in the
1980’s. It derives from Swing, Lindy
Hop & Rock n Roll & others, the
main innovation being to simplify the footwork.
Modern Jive is a generic terms that covers
a whole range of styles & moves. In
the UK, Modern Jive tends to be split into
a wide number of classes each essentially
teaching a similar style.
SWING MUSIC, also known as Swing Jazz, is
a form of Jazz music that solidifies as
a distinctive style during the 1930s in
the U.S. swing is distinguished primarily
by a strong rhythm section, usually consisting
of double bass & drums, medium to fast
tempo & the distinctive “swing”
that’s common to many forms of Jazz.
LINDY HOP
Lindy hop is a street Jazz dance that evolved
in Harlem, Manhattan, New York in the late
1920s & early1930s that emerged with
Swing Jazz. It is a fusion of many dances
from all over the US from the early 1900s
but is mainly based on the Charleston. Lindy
hop combines the movements & improvisation
of African dances with the formal eight-count
structure of European dances. African usually
separates the men from the women. Europeans
invented partner dancing.
