The guitar is a stringed instrument that
has been in existence in one form or another
since ancient times. A typical guitar is
equipped with six strings although there
are guitars that have either fewer or more
strings. Some of the other components of
a Guitar include the Headstock, Nut, Fret
board, Frets & Neck Joint.
HISTORY
Prior to the 16th century there is very
little written evidence of the existence
of Guitar in ancient times. The evidence
of Guitars prior to this point has included
graphical representations taken from the
artwork of ancient times. These paintings,
carvings & sculptures often depicted
a person with an object very similar to
a guitar. Although the Guitar was thought
to originate in the ancient near East, there
is also evidence that ancient Egypt &
medieval Europe also had musical instruments
that resembled the Guitar. In Babylonia
ancient artifacts show an instrument that
bears resemblance to the modern Guitar.
There is also evidence of Guitar –
like instruments prior to the 14th century,
possibly even as early as the third century.
France, Germany, England & Spain all
have depictions of crude Guitar instruments
in their history. The Guitar of medieval
Europe had a rectangular body & either
4 or 5 strings.
A Guitar is a stringed musical instrument.
For right-handed players, the right hand
plucks the strings with either the fingers
or a plectrum (Guitar pick), while the opposite
applies for left-handed players. Vibrating
strings, which in turn cause the body &
neck to resonate, produces the sound.
Guitars may be acoustic, electric (i.e.
with electrical amplification) or both.
Classical Guitars are also present in the
Guitar family. Guitars have a body acting
mostly as a resonator, which can be hollow
in acoustic guitars or solid in most electric
guitars & a neck. Typically, a headstock
extends from the neck for tuning. Guitars
are made & repaired by luthiers.
Guitars are used in a variety of musical
styles. Guitars are widely known as a solo
classical instrument & the primary instrument
in blues & rock music.
